THIRTEEN

The next morning, Lacey informed Sam that she was going with him to the studio.

“All right.” He agreed without question, but angled his head her way.

“You need help unloading the kiln,” she told him. She didn’t say she needed physical activity to keep her mind off the dead-in-the-water case. She didn’t have to.

At the studio, Lacey greeted Theodora and dropped her pack in a chair.

“She says hi,” Sam said, “and—”

Lacey leveled her gaze at him, her jaw tight.

“She says you look like you’re ready to work,” he finished.

Lacey smiled humorlessly at the ghost’s self-portrait. “Absolutely,” she told Theodora. She turned to Sam. “How do we do this?”

Sam grabbed up two pairs of heavy welder’s gloves and tossed one pair to her. “Come on outside,” he said.

Lacey pulled on the gloves as she walked, the heavy padded material coming almost to her elbows. She thought if she had a chest protector and shin guards, she could be a hockey goalie.

Outside, Sam entered the crude wooden lean-to he’d built over the kiln. The kiln itself looked surprisingly unassuming, a silver canister about the size of a trash can. It was a top-loader, and the lid was up, looking for all the world like a giant tin can.

“I’ll pull pieces out and hand them to you,” Sam said. “You can set them on the table.”

Lacey saw he’d pulled the rustic picnic table up close, and he’d covered the surface with fire brick.

“Is everything still hot?” she asked, feeling slightly uneasy.

“No, it should all be pretty cool,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean there might not be some hot spots. Just be careful.”

He leaned over the kiln and reached in with both hands, pulling out a large round plate. Cradling it in the oversized gloves, he handed it to Lacey, and she took it and laid it gingerly on the table. It was a uniform light gray, a blank canvas ready for painting or glazing.

Next came an almost spherical bowl with a very small mouth on top. This had a geometric pattern incised around it, and Lacey imagined Sam had ideas for bold colors to go with the bold design.

The third object was Lacey’s vase. She took it and held it in the huge glove as if it were a baby, gazing at it tenderly. Again, it looked small compared to Sam’s pieces, but now that it was fired, it seemed sturdier somehow. Stronger. She set it down next to the bowl.

“Okay,” Sam said. “Wanna come help me with the arrowhead?”

Feeling trepidation again, Lacey stepped up beside him. “Tell me what to do,” she said.

“I’m going to grab it and pull it out carefully,” he said. “You don’t need to try to hold it, but I’d like you to just kind of guide it so it doesn’t bump into the walls. You okay with that?”

“Sure,” she said, voicing more confidence than she felt.

She needn’t have worried. Sam pulled the arrowhead straight up, and although she kept her gloved hands between the sculpture and the walls of the kiln, it never got close.
